A Stepping Stone to Higher South Australian Wages
On 30 June 2022 the Chairman of the SA Productivity Commission, Mr Adrian Tembel, spoke at a meeting of the Young Professionals Group on the topic ‘A Stepping Stone to Higher South Australian Wages’. He noted that South Australia had underperformed the rest of the country over the past 20 years in terms of both overall economic growth and real wages. Mr Tembel called for a fundamental rethink of the State’s industry and trade policies and suggested that the policies that had been adopted by successive governments over the last 20-30 years should only be continued if credible evidence can be produced that demonstrate that they have worked. He also flagged the potential risks of the State’s increasing debt levels given the likelihood that the world is moving into a higher interest rate environment.
